Retiring to Lincolnshire: What Life’s Really Like

Posted on 25/11/2025 by Parklands

People’s ideas of Lincolnshire can be misguided. During exhibitions throughout the country where I have been raising the profile of Parklands of Lincoln, I have often heard people comment that Lincolnshire is very flat. I offer a wry smile and politely ask them if they’ve ever been.

From both my own and from our resident’s perspective, Lincolnshire is truly a fantastic place to live. It offers a balance of countryside, historic market towns and stunning coastlines. Throughout, there is plenty to do and explore, making it quite honestly, a place worth considering.

In this guide, we discuss in more detail what life is really like when it comes to retiring to Lincolnshire.

Why Retiring to Lincolnshire Is Worth Considering

Lincolnshire has long been a hidden gem for retirees seeking a slower, more fulfilling pace of life. According to recent census data, it’s become an increasingly popular destination for those over 65. Beside the beautiful scenery it has to offer, affordability plays a big factor in this.

Compared to the South East, South West, or East of England, Lincolnshire is much more affordable, with average house prices around £215,926, which is well below the national average. This is music to the ears of those seeking to retire as they’re able to free up capital in their existing house to help them make the most of their retirement.

During my time living and experiencing the county, I have observed how the people here are distinctively friendly, chatty and welcoming. For those that have made the move to Parklands, that’s been further harnessed by the culture found on the development. It encourages neighbourliness with its residency criteria, with all residents needing to be 50 or over (spouse can be 10 years younger), which sets a foundation for like-minded neighbours.

A Real Resident’s Experience

Josephine and David moved to Parklands and Lincolnshire around 3 years ago from Lancashire – a county with a very different character. To highlight what retiring in Lincolnshire is really like, I asked them to share a bit on their experience of making the move.

Life in Lincolnshire is totally different to where we came from in Lancashire.

We moved to the county in February 2022 and lived with my son and daughter-in-law until our property was ready which was December 2022.

Our son wanted us nearer because getting on in years and starting to get age related health issues I think he wanted to have us where he could keep an eye on us.

All the people we have met have been friendly and helpful. There is always someone who can point you in the right direction for assistance with tradesmen, the best dentists/doctors/opticians to try. There is more of a community feel here and lots of activities to pursue whether you are active or not.

The county is very flat unlike Lancashire and is therefore ideal for those with restricted mobility. The buses run regularly and fairly frequently, and you can travel the length and breadth of the county with not much trouble.

There are plenty of places to visit whether you are interested in history, aviation or just simply shopping. Coffee shops and garden centres abound and wildlife parks or a trip into historic Lincoln with its castle and cathedral will certainly not disappoint especially if you have grandchildren.

Compared to parts of Lancashire, especially where we came from, Lincolnshire is very clean with none of the long Victorian terraces and soot grimed buildings. There is plenty of open space and so many bungalows I was amazed I couldn’t believe it. At Parklands of Lincoln, you have the bungalow style home and because of the age criteria nobody is under 50, we are all retired and are a close-knit little community watching out for each other.

A better place you could wish to be.
