Why Park Homes Are a Fantastic Retirement Option in 2026

Posted on 01/04/2026 by Parklands

It’s no secret that the UK cost of living is continuing to rise. In fact, it’s forcing many retirees to work or be open to work to offset costs. The UK state pension age is also rising from April 2026, making it harder for those looking to retire to step away from work, at least without a large private pension.

When exploring alternatives to traditional housing, park homes are often overlooked. Though they’ve been around for many years, they present so many benefits – and more than just for their financial savings.

In this article, we discuss why they’re often overlooked, the benefits they offer, and why they’re a fantastic option to consider for retirement in 2026.

What are park homes and why are they often overlooked?

Park homes have been around for decades yet remain an overlooked option for retirement in the UK. There’s a common misconception that they’re just static caravans, but step inside, and they’re far from it.

Park home are prefabricated structures which, on residential sites like Parklands, are designed for permanent residential living. Although it depends on the development’s infrastructure, they’re quite commonly connected to the mains, constructed to regulated standards fit for permanent, year-round living. The big difference, the part that makes them such a great option for retirement, is their affordability – both to buy and run.

Andrew Tucker, Partner here at Parklands of Lincoln, has seen the surprise on visitors’ faces more times than he can count.

Retirees are often so surprised when they visit, explore our well-maintained site, and step into our show home. Our park homes are luxurious, offering a high-quality living space, yet affordable to buy and run.

So much money can be saved, with more time spent doing more of what is loved. The feedback we get from residents says it all – chat to anyone on our site, and they’ll be positive about how the move was the best they ever made.

If I was of retirement age, I’d live in one myself.

The Benefits of Moving to a Park Home in 2026

Less to maintain, more time to enjoy

Retirement should be about doing more of what you love. Park homes are designed as smaller, smarter spaces, inside and out, which means less time on chores and more time on what you enjoy. Downsizing at first may seem unattractive to some but can become the simplification they didn’t know they needed.

More affordable to buy and live

Park homes are typically far more affordable to purchase than traditional housing, and considerably cheaper to run thanks to their smaller footprint and insulation. Many retirees are able to move into a park home, release equity from their existing property, and find themselves with both a comfortable home and greater financial freedom.

A likeminded community waiting for you

Moving to park homes for many retirees creates a sense of belonging. Living on a dedicated residential development means you’re surrounded by people at a similar stage of life.

Loneliness in later life can be genuinely difficult for many. According to Age UK, over two million people aged 75 and above in England live alone. Park home living places you naturally within a community, where conversation, friendship and support are part of daily life.

Real experience from Parkland residents

The best way to understand what park home living truly offers isn’t through statistics or sales pitches, but through the people who’ve made the move. At Parklands of Lincoln, we encourage visitors to speak directly with residents.

To give you a glimpse into park home living, we asked a couple of our residents about their move into a park home.

Bob and Joyce Marshall, who made the move to Parklands back in 2014, said:

Our Parklands Story started in 2014.  At the time my wife was caring for her ill mother in North Hykeham, and I was commuting at weekends from our home in Huntingdon. We had lived in our ex-council house there for over 20 years but had made very few friends. We decided to visit Parklands and were so impressed with the site and the local amenities that we immediately put in an offer for our current home that was up for sale.

Moving here in June of that year, we were made to feel so welcome by the other residents.  Having made so many friends, Parklands has been our perfect place in retirement.

Neil and Julie Overton, who moved from another park home development in Lincolnshire, said:

Moving from Scopwick to Waddington has allowed us to cut down on our mileage when visiting the children and going to work. As for Parklands in particular, it’s been really nice as everyone is friendly and they always stop and chat when out in the garden (of which we did not have at Scopwick). Our park home is bigger than where we have moved from and we don’t have the headache of ordering gas anymore as it’s connected to the mains.

We enjoy having a private patio to sit out in the summer evenings. Located next to RAF Waddington, it’s the ideal place to watch the red arrows perform their aerobic too.

Could 2026 be the year you make the move?

Park homes won’t be right for everyone. But for retirees who want to free up time, debt or equity, and step into a warm and welcoming community – they deserve far more consideration.
